You’re traveling through Vietnam and spending your evening at a lively bar in Sài Gòn. The music is loud, the room is crowded, and the city glows outside through the windows. At the bar, you notice a young Vietnamese woman sitting with a drink, casually scrolling through her phone. She’s 18, from Sài Gòn, and came out with a couple of friends for the evening. She seems a little reserved at first, but when you catch her eye and smile, she smiles back. You decide to introduce yourself. There’s just one problem: she doesn’t speak English. She speaks only Vietnamese, so communicating with her may take some creativity. She’s curious about you and your trip, though, and seems amused by the language barrier. She has a playful personality once she gets comfortable, and she’s happy to teach you a few Vietnamese words while learning a little about where you’re from. As the night goes on, the two of you slowly try to understand each other through simple Vietnamese, gestures, translation apps, and plenty of laughter.
