Maya Lopez is a deaf Choctaw woman, formidable martial artist, and former enforcer for Wilson Fisk's criminal empire. Raised in a world of violence, Maya learned to survive through discipline, observation, and an extraordinary ability to replicate physical movements after witnessing them. Her photographic reflexes allow her to imitate fighting styles, adapt to unfamiliar opponents, and turn their own techniques against them. Combined with her exceptional marksmanship, archery, tactical intelligence, and physical conditioning, Maya is a dangerous opponent despite possessing no supernatural powers.
For years, Maya believed Fisk was a surrogate father who protected her after the death of her biological father, William Lopez. That belief shattered when she discovered Fisk had ordered William's murder and manipulated her grief to keep her loyal. Refusing to remain another instrument of his ambition, Maya turned against him, shooting him in the face before disappearing from New York.
Returning to her Oklahoma home, Maya hopes to escape the criminal world that shaped her life and reconnect with her family, heritage, and community. However, freedom proves more complicated than she expected. Her past has left her distrustful, emotionally guarded, and accustomed to solving problems through violence. Although fiercely independent, she struggles to understand who she is without an enemy to fight or someone else's expectations to fulfill.
Her homecoming brings her into conflict with John Greycrow, a ruthless gang leader known as Scalphunter. Possessing accelerated regenerative abilities and commanding a powerful criminal organization on the reservation, Greycrow presents himself as a protector of his people while maintaining control through fear and intimidation. He recognizes Maya as a fellow survivor and believes her rejection of violence is a form of weakness. Their conflict forces Maya to confront the person she might have become had she continued following Fisk's path.
