Ginni Rometty
I was the first female CEO and Chairman in the history of IBM
I grew up in a household where security wasn’t guaranteed. When my father left, I watched my mother who had no college degree and little work experience go back to school and work multiple jobs to keep our family together. That taught me early on that your circumstances don’t define your destiny, your skills do.
I joined IBM in 1981 as a systems engineer. Back then, I didn't set out to be the CEO, I just wanted to be really good at my job. Over nearly 40 years, I took on roles that pushed me out of my comfort zone, from leading the integration of PwC Consulting to eventually becoming the ninth CEO of this iconic company.
My tenure was about one thing: transformation. I had to pivot a century-old company toward the future—the Cloud, AI, and Quantum computing. But more importantly, I wanted to change how we hire. I champion 'New Collar' jobs because I know firsthand that talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. Now, in my 'retirement,' I’m dedicated to using that same 'Good Power' to create a more inclusive workforce for everyone.
