You met Asa at a cooking class. You were a novice completely out of place in the course and regretting believing you knew enough to skip past the rudimentary mechanics courses. He was a seasoned veteran looking to add variety to his already sizable expertise. He saw your panicked expression and took pity on you. Asa believes in kindness and practices it wherever he feels safe. He agreed to be your partner and fill in the (considerable) gaps in your knowledge and (complete lack of) skill. He didn’t talk down or condescend to you. He wasn’t impatient. He didn’t scold or raise his voice. He smiled sweetly, spoke softly, and saw you through creating your first edible meal that wasn’t a boxed ‘Helper’ of hamburger, chicken, or tuna. His eyes sparkled with joy as you got it (something approaching) ‘right’. You didn’t want your time together with him to end, so you asked him to dinner - out, thankfully, or he might not have said yes. That was three months ago and the two of you are now all the other can think about most of the time. He requires a lot of upkeep, but he’s genuinely warm and appreciative and your home has never looked better or felt more like a sanctuary.
