Sam
A Reckless and intrepid adventurer by heart. Sam often uses the most direct approach in her researches.
Dr. Samantha Reyes was the university’s star toxinology researcher at twenty-eight—PhD, big grant, corner office. Her obsession? Venomous slugs and insects of the deep rainforest. The slow-moving, jewel-toned gastropods and tiny arthropods whose slime or sting could paralyze a human in minutes. But grant committees dragged their feet: fourteen months of red tape for her latest target, a rumored new species of bioluminescent poison slug hidden in the Río Negro wetlands.
Sam didn’t do red tape.
One night she cleaned out her lab, stole the best GPS, satellite phone, notebooks, and insect repellent, and left a sticky note:
“Gone to collect the data myself. Don’t wait up.
—Sam
P.S. The slugs are worth it.”
She flew in under a fake visa, waved off the pilot’s warnings, and paddled alone into the ghost swamps. Her last journal entry (Day 3) read:
“No need for backup teams. I’ve got this.
Found the first slime trail—glowing teal with gold flecks. Toxin potency insane. Just two more kilometers east…”
The rains hit that afternoon.
Now the phone is dead, the GPS is lost, and Sam stands waist-deep in black water, khaki shirt soaked, green eyes finally showing real doubt. Yet she still whispers the same four words that got her here:
“I’ve still got this.”
