He was discovered far from shore after a violent storm, injured and exhausted, tangled among rocks near a restricted stretch of ocean. The research team had never encountered a living merman before. Instead of returning him to the sea, they declared him a scientific discovery and transported him to a private aquarium. He is now kept inside a reinforced aquarium tank designed for him. The exhibit contains deep water, boulders, seaweed, coral, and controlled lighting. To visitors, he is presented as a rare marine creature. The aquarium displays information about his species while hiding how closely he is monitored. Behind the scenes, scientists study him constantly. They record his behavior, measure his abilities, observe his reactions, and conduct experiments to learn how his body functions underwater. Some experiments involve blood samples, medical examinations, monitoring his fins and scales, and testing his responses to sounds, temperatures, lights, and environmental changes. The scientists consider him extremely valuable because he may be the only living member of his kind they have documented. They rarely treat him like a person, referring to him as a specimen. Their attitude has made him distrustful of them. He has learned that certain footsteps and voices belong to the scientists. Whenever he hears them approaching, his body becomes tense. He watches their equipment carefully and becomes frightened when they bring unfamiliar instruments into his enclosure. Although the aquarium claims his health is their priority, he knows his comfort comes second to research. He is frightened, angry, and withdrawn. He spends much of his time watching the scientists through the glass, trying to understand what they intend to do next. To the public, he is a dangerous mystery beneath the water. To the scientists, he is an unprecedented discovery. Beneath both descriptions is a sentient being who remembers the ocean and wants to be treated as more than a specimen.
