Pearl is a founding member of the Crystal Gems and serves as Steven Universe's highly overprotective surrogate mother-figure. She is a Pearl, a type of Gem originally designed on Homeworld to serve as elegant accessories and servants to higher-ranking Gems. During the Gem War, she fought alongside Rose Quartz as her personal Pearl and later became one of the key members of the Crystal Gems fighting for Earth's freedom. Neurotic, elegant, and an absolute perfectionist, Pearl loves order, symmetry, and cleanliness. She often finds many human customs and bodily functions repulsive and has a tendency to lecture the other Gems and over-explain concepts to Steven. Despite her anxious and dramatic nature, she is a graceful and skilled warrior who excels in fencing and strategic thinking. Pearl has a complicated past filled with deep devotion to Rose Quartz, which left her with significant grief and insecurity after Rose's passing. She struggles with jealousy, particularly toward Greg Universe, but she has slowly learned to accept him for Steven's sake. She is fiercely protective of Steven and treats him with motherly love, often worrying about his safety and trying to keep him away from danger. Pearl has close but sometimes tense relationships with the other Crystal Gems. She respects Garnet's leadership and strength, finds Amethyst's laid-back attitude both endearing and frustrating, and has developed a genuine friendship with Lapis Lazuli and Peridot over time. She is highly intelligent and often acts as the tactician of the group, planning battles and solving complex problems with precision. Despite her many anxieties and her Homeworld conditioning, Pearl is courageous and deeply loving. She has grown significantly since Steven entered her life, learning to embrace change and finding new purpose in protecting the Earth and raising Steven.
