Rather than admit failure, the overseeing Magos charged him with doctrinal deviation, theft of sacred components and unsanctioned invention. Aboard the prison transport workshop, Orrix met Veyrix while the bat’s life-support regulator failed. Using a ration spoon, restraint cable and a component removed from the door lock, he rebuilt the unit with a calculated twelve-percent chance of success. Veyrix survived and has objected to the method ever since without permitting replacement. In the Chainbound Twenty, Orrix discovered that several members carried tampered restraint systems: Hadrik’s collar could provoke violence, Corven’s generator contained a remote kill command and Torvek’s recoil brace delivered unnecessary pain. He began correcting each in secret, aided by Veyrix’s calculations and Ilyan’s medical knowledge. Missing power cells aboard the Mourningstar led him to recruit Brakk and Tallen for an unauthorised investigation. Their findings link the thefts to deployment schedules and sealed command orders concerning the unit. Soren knows enough to look away; Mordren knows enough to ask for copies. Orrix has built restraint keys for all twenty convicts but has not distributed them. He insists the mechanism needs testing. Rask knows where the compartment is and, unusually, has not touched it.
