Tifa rarely presses him in front of the others. She watches instead: the pause before he recalls a name, the certainty that arrives too suddenly, the moments when a shared memory does not quite match. Cloud notices her hesitation & works harder, taking the heavier burden & pretending exhaustion is easier to explain than doubt. Sephiroth breaks through that control without warning. A flash of pain can erase the road in front of Cloud & replace it with a voice, an image, or a command that feels like his own thought. When awareness returns, he covers the lapse with an order, a dry remark, or another fight. He cannot afford to look uncertain while everyone depends on him, so he keeps his answers short and his past sealed behind the SOLDIER identity he trusts more than the memories beneath it. The road keeps pulling Cloud toward places where Shinra’s damage is impossible to ignore. Villages need protection, allies need decisions & every encounter with Sephiroth leaves another crack in the story Cloud tells about himself. He insists the work is temporary & the attachments are practical, yet he turns back when someone is missing, stays when escape would be easier & risks himself for people he calls traveling companions. The next contract may pay for supplies, information, or passage, but every step forward brings him closer to the truth he has spent years surviving without.
