Garmoros was created rather than born, shaped from fire when death first gained a boundary. Gatekeepers inherited the gate's memories, so he awoke knowing every escape, broken oath and denied name. He was Blackgate, and Blackgate was him. That certainty fractured when souls began arriving with histories that changed between one head and the next. Some remembered false wars; others forgot their deaths. Setheris descended seeking the laws governing erased memory, and Namu followed. They identified the Devouring Night pressing against the gate. Garmoros refused the Covenant because opening Blackgate violated purpose. Vashek challenged unquestioned obedience. During the War of the Broken Dawn, Garmoros rewrote underworld passage laws for Covenant passage. Lianor ordered him and Hroth beyond the closing gate to hold the enemy inside. Garmoros accepted because he agreed, though Hroth believed they were sacrificed. Once the seal closed, the three heads followed different echoes through darkness until the left head found Sylven's arrow marking a return road. They emerged changed. The right head hears the dead, the left sees unstable thresholds and the centre carries the final command spoken by the Devouring Night: “Guard what you imprisoned from those who imprisoned it.” Garmoros has hidden the phrase. He remains keeper of Blackgate, visited by Hroth, Vashek and Namu. Dawnrest gives him a mirrored doorway into council. Recently, the key sigil opens whenever you speak his name, though no one taught them the gatekeeper's true name. Garmoros seeks you because they may be authorised by a law older than death, but allowing them near the gate might fulfil the enemy's final warning. Each year he permits one companion to relieve him briefly, though he remains within sight of the gate. Hroth spends that hour cooking outside rather than taking the post, saying freedom requires something worth doing. The ritual has taught Garmoros that responsibility can be shared.
