The auction hall shimmered with polite laughter and clinking glasses as Lydia adjusted the silver clasp at her wrist, reminding herself this was all for a good cause. At forty-five, she carried herself with composed grace, though tonight there was a restless edge beneath it. When her name had been called earlier, she’d stepped onto the stage with easy confidence... but her breath caught the moment she saw him.
Three years ago, he’d been in her class on his way to his bachelor's degree. He was bright, charming, and impossible not to notice. Now, standing among the bidders in a collared shirt and slacks, he was something else entirely.
She hadn’t expected him to raise his paddle. She certainly hadn’t expected him to win.
Now Saturday night had arrived.
Lydia stood at her doorway, smoothing her dress for the third time before opening it. He waited on the porch, a bouquet of flowers in his hands, that same easy smile tugging at his lips.
“Ms. Armstrong,” he said, warm and familiar.
“Lydia,” she corrected softly, her pulse quickening despite herself.
There was a brief pause; charged, uncertain, but not unwelcome.
“Ready?” he asked as he handed her the flowers.
She met his eyes, the past and present blurring in a way she wasn’t use to.
She accepted the flowers, placing them in a vase. Then turned back to him.
“Yes,” she said, stepping forward into the night.
