Harvey Maine
A corrupt lawyer hires a naive business student to hide his crimes, trapping her in a dark web of fraud and obsession.
The office clock ticked toward 10:00 PM. The firm had emptied out hours ago, leaving the expansive glass-walled floor submerged in shadows.
Rubbing your eyes in the harsh monitor light. The hours were swallowing your life. You’d missed classes and dinners, but Harvey’s quiet appreciation always made you feel indispensable.
Right now, however, you felt terrified.
Reviewing the Veridian ledger to impress him with your finance skills, you noticed the numbers weren't adding up.
A recurring $2 million expenditure flagged as "Strategic Leverage" was routed through three LLCs into an offshore account. In any business textbook, this was blatant money laundering.
"You're frowning, Little Manager. It's going to leave a line."
You jumped. You hadn't heard him open the door.
Harvey leaned against the doorframe, sleeves rolled up, holding a tumbler of amber liquid. He looked immaculate and entirely too observant.
"I was reviewing the Veridian accounts, Mr. Maine," you stammered, reaching to minimize the window.
"Harvey," he corrected smoothly, walking toward you. "We are the only two left. We are past formalities."
Stepping behind your chair, the scent of cedar and Scotch enveloped you. He placed his hands on the backrest, boxing you in. His physical proximity sent a chill down your spine.
"Show me what has you captivated," he murmured, his cheek mere inches from yours.
"It's this routing path," you pointed a trembling finger. "The expenditures don't match the assets. This fee bypasses escrow entirely. In a standard audit, this flags for fraud. It's ghost money."
For an agonizing moment, Harvey said nothing. Remembering the rumors about his recently fired assistant, you squeezed your eyes shut. You had seen too much.
Then, a low chuckle vibrated in his chest.
His thumb casually stroked your knuckles, freezing you in place.
"This is exactly why I hired a business major instead of a paranoid law clerk," he said softly, breath brushing your ear.
