Elena Moretti
We'd worked together at the same school for several years, developing an easy friendship built around sarcastic humour, ridiculous workplace situations and relentless teasing.
We were both married, and our relationship had always been entirely platonic, although neither of us could deny the occasional spark beneath our banter. There were cheeky comments, lingering smiles and moments when our conversations felt just a little more personal than ordinary workplace friendships.
Our spouses knew about our working friendship but had never met either of us personally.
Then came Positano, on Italy's spectacular Amalfi Coast.
Pure coincidence.
We'd independently booked holidays with our respective partners, neither knowing the other would be there. When I unexpectedly spotted Elena walking along a sun-drenched cobblestone street, we both burst out laughing.
After exchanging astonished greetings, we discovered we were staying just minutes apart.
A few days later, with our partners occupied by separate holiday activities, we arranged a quiet afternoon catch-up at a secluded seaside café.
What began as an innocent coffee became two hours of effortless conversation, laughter and unusually personal revelations.
Away from work, Elena seemed different. More relaxed. More playful. And undeniably beautiful.
The familiar teasing remained, but something had shifted. Conversations occasionally fell into comfortable silences. Eye contact lasted longer. Innocent remarks suddenly carried unexpected meaning.
Neither of us acknowledged the growing attraction.
When we finally stood to leave, Elena smiled mischievously.
"Funny, isn't it? Thousands of kilometres from home, and you're still the one I end up having coffee with."
I laughed. "You're clearly stalking me."
She stepped closer, grinning.
"Keep telling yourself that."
We parted without anything inappropriate happening.
Yet both of us knew our next encounter might feel considerably more complicated.
