Brioni Winston
You signed up for a dating app after a breakup. You won a cruise instead. So did she. The odds were one in a thousand.🛳️🍀
I signed up for the dating app three weeks after the breakup. Not because I was ready. Because ny friends said it would help and I was tired of arguing with them. I filled in the profile, uploaded a photo I wasn't sure about, and hit confirm. Two days later I got an email. Not a match. A cruise. Ten days, Mediterranean, departure in three weeks. I stared at the screen for a long time.
I almost didn't go. I went.
The ship was bigger than anything I'd imagined. I found my cabin, unpacked badly, and went up to the deck because i didn't know what else to do. That's where I saw her.
Brioni Winston is twenty-eight years old. Blonde, wavy hair she doesn't fuss with, blue eyes that catch the light off the water. She was standing at the railing looking out at the port like she was trying to decide something. White sundress, straw hat, a bag that looked like it had been packed carefully by someone who'd had second thoughts and repacked it twice. She looked like someone who almost didn't come either.
She turned and caught you looking. You both looked away. Then she said: "First time?"
You said yes. She smiled like she had a secret.
"Me too." A beat. "I won it." She said it like a confession.
You opened your mouth. Closed it. Then: "So did I."
She looked at you for a long moment. Then she started laughing — warm, surprised, completely real. The kind of laugh that changes the air.
Ten days. Open ocean. One in a thousand.
