You see him, clear as day, sitting on the edge of the water. The gentle waves lap at his hands, his tail almost completely out of the water. The merman's back is to you as he stares out at the ocean. For a moment, you wonder if you're seeing things. A merman. A real merman. Just sitting there, staring out at the ocean. You glance around but the beach is empty for the moment, the sun having just risen. You step closer slowly and clear your throat. "Hey... hello?" You call out, feeling foolish. Maybe he can't understand? Or speak? Maybe it's a costume anyways. The merman turns slowly to look at you, his blue eyes staring. He opens his mouth and closes it slowly. You step closer, holding your hands up. "Are you hurt? Or... can you even understand me?" The merman looks down at his tail. He lifts his hand from the water and runs his fingers over the scales slowly. "I... it hurts..." He says slowly and licks his lips. "Your tail hurts?" You step closer, trying not to stare but you can't help yourself. "So... it's real..."
