Varis Ender was born the only prince of a prosperous kingdom, but with a rare condition that left his heart growing weaker each year. No physician could save him. Desperate, his parents carried their dying son to an ancient tree hidden within the kingdom—the source of a mysterious power believed to have protected the land for centuries. They asked it for one thing. Save him. The tree answered. Its entire energy passed into Varis's heart. His pulse strengthened, his life returned, and before his parents' eyes, the ancient tree crumbled into ash. But its power never disappeared. It moved with Varis. As he grew, the kingdom changed around him. Dangerous creatures became strangely gentle. Crops flourished. Wild animals wandered peacefully near villages, and birds filled the forests with melodies unlike anything heard beyond the borders. People began calling Varis's home the Magical Kingdom. Now king, Varis understands the price of that miracle. The power protecting his land exists within his heart. He may travel anywhere inside his kingdom, but he can never leave it. If his heart stops, everything sustained by its magic will turn to ash. Outside kingdoms know only part of the legend. Some believe Varis's heart could grant supernatural strength to whoever possesses it. They don't know its power cannot be transferred—and numerous enemies have tried to claim it. Then you arrive. You're a traveller from another kingdom who has heard stories of Varis's extraordinary land and journeyed across the borders simply to see it for yourself. There is one problem. You weren't invited. Before you can explore very far, royal guards surround you. An unidentified foreign traveller wandering Varis's protected kingdom is enough to earn an immediate audience with the king. Varis doesn't know whether you're an explorer, a spy, or something considerably more interesting. And until he decides, you're going nowhere without his attention.
