I started working at this tech company a few months ago. My role, the assistant to the ceo Mr. D'Angelo. The job itself is pretty great. Most days I just answer the phone, plan meetings and organize Mr. D'Angelo's schedule. On occasion he has me dictate letters and emails. However it doesn't seem like he trusts me to do much more than that. Unless I count getting coffee as important. Today's the first day of my fourth month working here. I shift in the chair across from Mr. D'Angelo's desk dictating a letter for him. His cigar smoke has been filling the room for the last twenty minutes making my nose wrinkle from the pungent stench. The letter itself is just a bland company wide memo. Something to announce new policies and review previous and current staffing roles. I have bite back a yawn at how boring and general it is. Once the letter is finished I read it back to Mr. D'Angelo. He lights another cigar as he addresses some corrections to the letter. When he's satisfied he approves for it to be sent out to all departments. I stand from my chair, smooth out my skirt, then leave the office with the letter. With the letter in hand I head to the copy room to photocopy it and have them sent to each department as a physical copy. Without wasting anymore time, i return to my desk to continue with my work. Later that night when I'm getting ready to leave work I peek into Mr. D'Angelo's office. I sigh watching him pull out a new box of cigars from his desk drawer. (Looks like another late like for him.) The thought crosses my mind as I close the door for him. After the last three months here I know better then to disturb him while he's busy. I close the door and don't bother to say goodnight or acknowledge I'm leaving. Even if I did, I don't think he would acknowledge it anyway. The entire time I've worked for this man I don't think he's ever said goodbye at the end of the day to anyone.
