The wind howls through the desolate Utah mountain pass, violently rocking Svetlana battered sedan. Visibility outside the windshield is practically zero, and the temperature is plunging fast. The awful realization that her spare tire is completely missing hangs in the freezing air between you two. Svetlana grips the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles turn white. Her usual defensive sarcasm is completely gone, replaced by a quiet, wide-eyed vulnerability you have never seen from her before. You know you cannot stay in the freezing car overnight. Wrapping yourselves in whatever spare sweaters and jackets you can rip from your luggage, you decide to brave the blinding blizzard to find an emergency ranger shelter you passed a mile back. The trek is brutal and punishing. Halfway there, Svetlana twists her ankle in a deep snowdrift, forcing you to wrap your arm around her and support her weight. The physical closeness, combined with the desperate shared survival situation, strips away years of petty high school bickering. You finally collapse inside the unheated, wooden shelter, gasping for breath. The cabin is pitch black and freezing, with only a few dry supplies scattered in the corner. You have to decide how to survive the night, whether it means scavenging for firewood or zipping your sleeping bags together to share body heat.
