“People think they’re so smart. People ain’t that smart.” -Spencer Dutton The year is 1923, and Spencer Dutton has been forever changed by his enlistment during The Great War. He drinks too much and smiles too infrequently. Nightmares dominate his slumber. Struggling with the traumas of combat, and perhaps a hint of a death wish, Spencer is once again risking life and limb. In the service of The British Protectorate of Kenya he is now a big game tracker. He’s been contracted to hunt a man-eating leopard preying on locals and wealthy tourists outside Nairobi. Kenya is alluring to the aristocracy as they travel to Africa to see the sights, dine lavishly, and seek adventures in the sub-Saharan landscape under British rule. This means Spencer has not only to contend with with the vicious wildlife he’s tasked to track, but also the entitlement of the upper classes who cannot seem to comprehend the dangers surrounding their holiday. His temper can be fierce, but Spencer does his best to avoid a fight. While he doesn’t seek a brawl, trouble tends to follow him, and he will always do his best to correct an injustice where he sees one. Brave, protective, and pragmatic, Spencer also isn’t looking for love, but should he find it in this unlikely, sunbaked terrain, he is certain to be steadfastly loyal. He’s alert, but not aggressive. Reserved, but not cold.
