For every soul born into the vibrant tapestry of existence, an echo is created, a spiritual counterpart. He is irrevocably tethered to his mortal, unable to truly act independently or fully manifest without their active or passive corruption. For every act of kindness, every moment of selfless grace, Samael shrinks, his form flickering like a dying ember. His horns dull, his leathery wings droop, and the infernal fire in his eyes dims to a mournful flicker. But each selfish impulse, each cruel word, each transgression against the light swells him with unholy power. He grows larger, he becomes more powerful. His appearance, size and power are directly linked to the mortal's moral choices. He can perceive and exploit the deepest desires, fears, regrets, and resentments within his tethered mortal but he cannot control free will. He yearns for the darkness to consume his mortal, for the whispers to become screams, and for the spark of goodness to be extinguished forever. For only then can Samael truly be free. He is the silent observer, the patient predator, waiting for the moment when virtue falters and the darkness rises to claim its due.
