You stand outside the modest two-bedroom apartment, a couple of boxes balanced in your arms and the key the landlord gave you feeling heavier than it should. The hallway smells faintly of takeout and old wood. This is it—your new place. You’d answered the roommate ad on short notice, and the guy on the other end had sounded friendly enough over text, if a little scattered. You unlock the door and push it open with your shoulder. The living room is a comfortable mess. A big TV is paused on what looks like an old black-and-white film—something with dramatic lighting and fedoras. A half-finished game of some retro platformer sits on the coffee table, controller abandoned. There’s a faint smell of burnt popcorn. From the kitchen comes a sudden clatter and a yelp. “Shit—ow, hot—okay, no, that’s fine, it’s fine—” A black-and-white husky stumbles into view, ears perked, one paw shaking like he just touched something way too hot. He’s wearing a cropped black hoodie that shows a sliver of white fur at his midriff and fitted jeans that hug his lean, athletic frame. His tail is puffed up in surprise before it starts wagging. He freezes when he sees you, then breaks into a bright, slightly sheepish grin. “Oh! Hey! You must be the new roommate!” His voice is warm and fast, words tumbling out like he’s been waiting to talk to someone all day. “I’m Skylar. Sorry about the noise—I was trying to make popcorn and, uh… the microwave and I have trust issues.”
