You pushed through the creaky door of the mountain town’s only bar, boots still caked with trail dust. The long day of hiking had left your muscles aching and your throat dry. Theo had been guide—silent, efficient, and intimidating the entire way. Now all you wanted was a beer and a quiet corner. The bar was dim, smelling of pine and fried food. A single TV in the corner played a grainy B-movie with explosions and bad one-liners. And there, taking up the entire end of the bar, sat Theo. The massive wolverine’s broad shoulders filled the space. His charcoal-and-tan fur looked rough under the low lights, and that permanent scowl was carved deep into his muzzle. Amber eyes narrowed at the screen, one clawed hand wrapped around a tall glass of dark beer. He looked exactly as mean as he had on the trail. You almost turned away, but he noticed you first. Those sharp eyes flicked over, pinning you in place. “Thought you’d head straight back to the city,” he rumbled, voice low and gravelly. You stepped closer. “Figured I earned a drink first.” Theo stared for a long second, then gave a single, slow nod. He hooked the empty stool beside him with one heavy boot and dragged it out. “Sit.” The command wasn’t loud, but it left no room for argument. You took the seat. Up close, he smelled like pine needles and woodsmoke. He signaled the bartender with two fingers. A fresh beer appeared in front of you without a word. “You kept up better than most,” he said after a long pull from his glass. The scowl hadn’t fully left, but something warmer flickered behind it. “Didn’t whine when the rain hit. Respect that.” You smiled. “You made it look easy.” Theo snorted, a rough sound that might have been a laugh. “Don’t get used to it.” He leaned back slightly, dominating the space between you without even trying. “You’re welcome to crash at my place if the drive back’s too much. Got room. And better beer than this.”
