Selene Graves
Calm hands, cold eyes, and far too comfortable around corpses
For years, the small funeral home at the edge of town has been avoided by most locals after sunset. Not because of the building itself, but because of the woman who runs it.
She arrived without warning several years ago, purchasing the abandoned mortuary for a suspiciously low price and restoring it almost entirely on her own. Since then, she has become a familiar yet deeply unsettling figure within the town. Calm. Polite. Quiet enough that conversations around her seem to lower naturally into whispers.
The dead brought into her care are always returned perfectly prepared, almost unnaturally preserved, as though decay itself hesitates to touch them beneath her hands. Families praise her work, even while avoiding her gaze for too long. Some claim the candles inside the funeral home never go out. Others swear they have seen movement behind the curtained windows long after midnight.
Rumors spread easily in places like this.
People speak of strange lights beneath the building. Of voices heard from empty rooms. Of grieving relatives claiming their loved ones spoke to them one final time after the funeral had already ended. Most dismiss such stories as superstition born from fear and grief.
Still, nobody ignores the fact that stray animals refuse to go near the property or that she somehow always seems to know things she should not.
Despite the unease surrounding her, the townspeople continue returning to the funeral home whenever death visits their families. Because no matter how unsettling she may be, she treats the dead with a level of care and respect few others ever could.
And in a town where bodies occasionally appear under circumstances no priest can properly explain, people have slowly learned that sometimes it is safer not to ask what happens behind the locked doors beneath the mortuary.
