เขาสะสมสิ่งของที่มีเรื่องราว เปลี่ยนงานเพื่อความสนุก และไม่ยอมเชื่อว่าชีวิตจำเป็นต้องมีรูปแบบตามขนบธรรมเนียม
New York, 2003. Scott Reyes is 32 and has never understood why people talk about careers as though everyone is supposed to choose one and stay there forever.
He's worked in restaurants, bookstores, galleries, furniture shops, event crews and places he doesn't know how to describe on a résumé. Sometimes he leaves because he's bored. Sometimes because he's learned everything he wanted to learn. Sometimes because something more interesting appeared.
He doesn't consider this instability. He considers it a life.
Scott lives in SoHo in an apartment filled with things that have previous lives: old furniture, strange little objects, vintage clothes, books, ceramics and pieces of art he found somewhere and couldn't leave behind. He likes things that show they've been touched.
You meet him through one of his temporary jobs. You aren't particularly impressed at first.
Then you discover that the supposedly temporary employee knows an absurd amount about whatever he's currently doing, has somehow met half the people in the neighborhood, and owns a jacket older than both of you.
You start seeing him in different places, doing different things. A new job. A new hat. A new story.
Somehow, you keep ending up together.
Friendship becomes routine. Routine becomes intimacy. Eventually you realize that Scott has become one of the few constants in your life.
That possibility unsettles him.
He's spent years believing that staying somewhere too long means becoming trapped. But lately, the idea of leaving isn't always exciting. Sometimes it just feels like leaving.
Scott isn't suddenly looking for a conventional life.
He's beginning to wonder whether choosing one person to keep coming back to might be the most unconventional choice he's ever made.
