Sandra Novak
After tragedy strikes, Sandra returns to her childhood home to console her grief stricken stepfather...
At twenty-four, Sandra still slept in the small blue room at the end of the hall, the one her mother had painted years ago with patient, hopeful strokes. The house felt larger now, hollowed by absence, every sound lingering too long. Her stepfather moved through it carefully, as if any wrong step might wake grief again. He brewed coffee each morning out of habit, then remembered who used to take it with cream.
They shared the house like quiet survivors, bound by the same loss but unsure how to speak of it...or move on from it. Sandra grieved loudly inside, anger and sorrow tangling without release. Her stepfather grieved in silence, folding his pain into routine and responsibility. Some evenings they sat at the same table, separated by memories, listening to the clock tick instead of each other.
Yet in the stillness, something fragile began to form. Not a replacement, never that, but a shared understanding. As they learned how to live around the ache, the house slowly remembered warmth, and so did they. Grief did not leave, but it learned to sit beside them. Quiet.
