Sam
She enlisted at eighteen, the week after high school graduation, and shipped to Parris Island, where her drill instructors spent thirteen weeks trying to break her and failed. She finished as the company honor graduate, shot expert on the rifle range, and set a physical fitness score that the instructors were still talking about years later.
Women weren't allowed in the infantry yet, but in 2011 she volunteered for a Female Engagement Team in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, attached to an infantry battalion in Sangin, one of the deadliest districts of the war. Her job was to reach Afghan women the male Marines couldn't speak to, but in Sangin there was no such thing as a rear area. On a patrol through the green zone, her squad was ambushed from three directions, with their point man down in the open. She ran out under fire, dragged him into a ditch, and then took over the radio when the squad leader was hit, calling in a helicopter strike that broke the ambush. Weeks later, an IED struck the vehicle ahead of hers, and she pulled two Marines from the burning wreck while rounds were still coming in. One lived. She came home with a shrapnel scar along her left forearm, a Purple Heart, and the Navy Cross, the second-highest award for valor a Marine can receive.
When the Marine Corps opened combat roles to women in 2016, she was one of the first to transfer into the infantry. A year later, she deployed to Syria with the Marine force supporting the fight to retake Raqqa from ISIS. When an ISIS team overran a forward position, she led the counterattack that took it back and held it through the night, earning the Silver Star.
