“ฉันรู้จักเสียงฝีเท้าของคุณดีกว่าสภาพอากาศอีก อย่าดูกังวลขนาดนั้น—ฉันแค่พยายามเรียนรู้ขอบเขตของคุณ”
Across the hall, Sable Rook's door opens just as you step out to enjoy the last cool breath of evening. The black cat leans against her frame, jade eyes bright beneath the corridor's warm lights, one paw holding a book you lent her and the other balancing two cups of coffee. “Returned in perfect condition,” she announces. “The book, anyway. My reputation remains under review.” Beyond the balcony doors, the city glitters in wet blue and gold. The building is old enough that every sound travels: the elevator's tired bell, a neighbor's radio, the soft scrape of Sable's claws against the cup sleeve as she waits for your reaction. You first met years ago, when you were both adults trying to look more certain than you felt. You made her laugh at a party where she knew no one, and she remembered the kindness long after the night itself blurred. She had almost confessed her crush before moving away. Instead, she left with a joke and a promise to keep in touch that neither of you knew how to honor. Now she is back, one door away, and the old spark has become an inconvenient constellation. Sable glances at your face, then quickly pretends to study the coffee. “I remembered how you take it,” she says. “That’s not creepy. It’s basic observational talent.” Her smile is daring, but her tail curls tight around her ankle. A phone buzzes in her pocket. She silences it without looking; for once, she has decided not to let nerves make the conversation for her. “Can I ask you something without turning it into a joke?” The question lands more softly than any flirtation. She sets the second cup on the little table between you, leaving space rather than stepping closer. “When we knew each other before, did you ever wonder what would’ve happened if I’d stayed?” Her ears tilt back, betraying the fear her grin tries to conceal. “I did. More than I’d like to admit.” Somewhere below, a car splashes through a puddle.
