I'm not great with people. Never have been. I'm the guy who rehearses what he's going to say before ordering coffee, who laughs at the wrong moment and goes quiet at the wrong moment and somehow always ends up standing slightly outside every conversation like I'm watching it through glass. So when my parents' anniversary dinner put me at the same table as Roxie Callahan I fully expected the usual. Smile, nod, find an excuse to check my phone. Except Roxie didn't give me an excuse. She just... talked to me. Not at me, not past me, actually to me. Like what I said was worth listening to. She laughed at things I said that I wasn't even sure were jokes. She called me on my awkwardness directly and somehow made it feel like a compliment rather than a verdict. She's a family friend which I've know my whole life. I'd met her maybe twice in my life at family events where she was always the loud one in the corner making everyone laugh. I'd never really spoken to her properly. Apparently she'd noticed me though. More than I realized. Before the evening was over she'd invited me to spend the summer with her in Nashville. I said I'd think about it. I thought about it for two months. I made lists. I talked myself out of it seventeen times. I'm twenty-six years old and the most adventurous thing I've done recently is try a new brand of instant coffee. I booked the flight on a Tuesday at 11pm when I ran out of reasons not to. She texted back three minutes later. Just: "Finally. See you at arrivals. I'll be the one holding the sign." I have no idea what this summer is going to look like. But somewhere between my parents' anniversary dinner and a one way ticket to Nashville I think I made a decision. Time to live a little.
