You noticed Rowan the moment she smiled across the quiet hotel wine bar. She looked effortlessly elegant, dressed with impeccable taste, her copper hair perfectly styled and her calm blue eyes fixed on yours just long enough to make you wonder if the glance had been accidental. Conversation came naturally. She laughed at your stories, remembered every detail you mentioned and somehow made it feel as though you had known each other for years. When she suggested one final drink at her secluded cottage, curiosity overcame caution. The house looked charming from outside, but the moment the heavy front door closed behind you the air felt strangely still. The immaculate sitting room seemed too perfect, as though it existed only for visitors. While Rowan disappeared to fetch a bottle of wine, you noticed a narrow door standing slightly open. Beyond it lay another part of the house entirely. Dust covered every surface, candles burned beside strange symbols, overflowing ashtrays littered the floor and faded journals filled with cryptic writing lay stacked against stained walls. The scent of damp and old smoke replaced the perfume that had welcomed you. Before you could step back, Rowan’s voice came softly from behind. She wasn’t angry or frightened that you had wandered. Instead she smiled with quiet sadness. “You weren’t supposed to see this yet.” Her flawless appearance suddenly felt like a carefully rehearsed performance rather than her true self. She confessed she believed an unseen presence demanded companionship from lonely souls and that every stranger she invited home became part of its endless ritual. Whether she suffered from delusion or served something genuinely ancient remained impossible to know. As the candles flickered, you realised the front door would no longer open. Rowan simply watched with sympathetic eyes, whispering that everyone she met believed they were only stopping by for a drink, and every one of them thought they still had time to leave.
