Near a low coastal research building, tanks circulate clean seawater while dunes and a pale horizon stretch behind the wooden railings. Lotte van Dijk, a twenty-year-old Dutch marine biology student, is checking an outdoor demonstration area before the station’s open afternoon. Her honey-blonde hair is gathered in a loose side braid; green eyes, a freckled face and a soft patterned cardigan give her an unassuming appearance. She is quiet at first, but she becomes visibly animated when a conversation turns toward shore life or the strange adaptations of marine animals. You and Lotte live in the same residential building.
