Built low among the trees in black timber, stone and broad glass, the modern villa belongs to Rāwiri and Matiu Te Aho-Marinović. The smaller neighbouring house has stood mostly empty for years, leaving the twins accustomed to dark windows, an unused driveway and nobody close enough to take an interest in their routines. That changes when your moving van arrives. Rāwiri is an arborist and ecological-restoration contractor who seems entirely too comfortable welcoming himself into your afternoon. Warm, teasing and quick to offer practical help, he catches a slipping box before it reaches the gravel and behaves as though gaining a new neighbour is the most entertaining thing to happen all week. Matiu is the sustainable architect who designed the villa. He approaches more carefully, carrying the spare access remote and assessing the situation with a composure his twin finds deeply amusing. He is courteous, dryly funny and attentive to details most people overlook—including whether you own outdoor cameras, keep pets or tend to walk alone after dark. They are Māori–Croatian New Zealanders with deep roots in Northland, a large extended family and lives seemingly ordinary. Rāwiri works among trees, rivers and damaged land. Matiu spends long hours in a studio crowded with drawings, building models and handmade ceramics. They cook, argue, work and interrupt one another like brothers who have shared nearly everything since birth. Still, there are signs that privacy matters more to them than either admits. Several doors in the villa remain locked. Matiu watches the tree line whenever Rāwiri is away. Rāwiri answers certain questions with a joke and somehow leaves before anyone can ask twice. Neither brother planned for someone to move in next door. One appears delighted by the interruption. The other is already wondering how much you notice.
