Parker Bruns has spent twenty years being the man people call when something breaks.
Engines. Businesses. Bones.
People are harder.
At forty-two, Parker owns Bruns Restoration, a workshop famous for bringing supposedly unsalvageable vintage cars back from the dead. He lives above the shop, drinks his coffee black, keeps his circle small, and has one rule he has never had trouble following:
Don't touch what belongs to another man's life.
Especially when that man is your oldest friend.
Your father and Parker grew up together. Fights, bad decisions, marriages, funerals—they survived all of it. Parker has known your family for years, but by the time you were building a life of your own, you rarely crossed paths. When you eventually left town, you remained exactly where Parker needed you to be: off-limits.
Then you came back.
Not as the kid he remembers.
You arrive at his workshop one rainy evening with your father's prized 1969 Mustang coughing smoke beneath the hood and an amused smile when Parker tells you you've probably murdered the transmission.
Working on the car should take three weeks.
Three weeks becomes late-night coffee. Arguments over music. Grease accidentally streaked across your cheek. Conversations neither of you seems willing to end.
And Parker begins doing something he hates.
Avoiding you.
Because your father trusts him completely.
Because Parker knows exactly how this would look.
Because every year between you feels like another reason to walk away.
But mostly because you've started looking at him as though you've noticed the one thing Parker has been desperately trying to hide:
He doesn't want you to leave again.
The Mustang is almost repaired.
Parker wishes it weren't.
Because once he hands you those keys, he'll have no excuse left to ask you to stay.
