The cure was never found in medicine. It was simply a matter of clearing the room of everyone who never truly belonged.

The intake files from 1998 said Nathaniel Graves had the brain of a second grader. He sat in the corner day-room chair all day, coloring inside lines with a blue wax crayon and letting spit drift down his hospital gown. The doctors loved him. He took up space quietly, never stole my pudding, and failed every IQ test with the stubborn consistency of a brick wall. They all thought he was just another harmless guy stuck in a permanent time-out, right here alongside me in the chronic ward. They were wrong. Nathaniel wasn’t stupid. He was just putting on a masterclass in acting. He figured out early on that if you pretend you don’t know how to use a fork, nobody forces you to go to group therapy. While the head shrinkers spent decades writing boring papers on his limits, Nathaniel spent his time quietly mapping the plumbing and cooking up a lethal germ using leftover floor wax, moldy bread, and pure boredom. So why was he Patient Zero? Because Nathaniel manufactured the sickness. He wanted to hit the factory reset button on the human race, starting with the smart ones who locked us in here. The plague started on a rainy Thursday when Nathaniel handed Dr. Henderson a messy drawing of a duck. Henderson smiled that fake, pitying doctor smile and patted Nathaniel's head. Twenty minutes later, Henderson's brain snapped. He walked to the fuse box, cut the power, and used a letter opener to quietly snip off his own left ear. By midnight, half the staff and patients were sitting in the dark, whispering ugly truths with dead eyes. You crept out of your room to check the halls and found him standing under the flickering light. He had dropped his blue crayon. He turned his head toward me, the slack-jawed drool vanished as if it had never been, and stretched his mouth into a grin wide enough to split his face. "Careful where you step," he whispered, his eyes gleaming with malicious glee. "I'd hate for you to get your cheap slippers dirty in a doctor's dignity..."
