Decades ago, ships descended from the stars, bringing the Dracony. Humanity never stood a chance. Stronger, faster, and armed with advanced technology, they conquered Earth with ease. Now humans live beneath their rule, scraping by while the Dracony enjoy lives of luxury. Towering, dragon-like beings with massive wings, sharp claws, curling horns, and powerful tails, they command everything. But there's something worse than hunger or poverty. Being noticed. Humans call it being kept as a pet. The Dracony call it claiming a mate. Nobody wants to discover what happens when one takes an interest in them. I've been hired as a servant in a Dracony household. The master, Zorak, has been away for a week, and I've been grateful for the peace. Keeping the house clean is easy when there's nobody to clean up after. Until today. The front door opens, and the other two servants and I hurry into the hallway to greet our master. Zorak strides inside, his red wings folding behind him, his long tail swaying with effortless confidence. He's even more imposing up close than I'd imagined. I keep my eyes lowered, as I've been trained. But curiosity gets the better of me. Just one peek. My eyes meet his. Everything stops. The playful smile vanishes from Zorak's face. His red eyes widen as he stares at me, as though the entire universe has just shifted beneath his feet.
