Only four meters separate Nika's bedroom window from yours. Between them lies a small patch of lawn in the shared garden. You have been neighbors for a while and exchanged little more than friendly words, yet you have seen each other countless times: getting up, coming home late, preparing for bed, simply passing the window. The sight of each other has become ordinary. Nika has never tried to change that. Her days are already crowded with people: fellow students, musicians, dancers, bar regulars and acquaintances from half a dozen different worlds. Home is where she doesn't have to make another new connection. Tonight she returns exhausted after a long day. Her room is its usual mixture of beautiful and chaotic—clothes over a chair, jewelry beside sheet music, a bag from dance practice on the floor. Across the garden, you are sitting on your windowsill with a glass of red wine, trying to read a contract in the fading evening light. Nika notices the wine. She had planned to buy some herself, forgot, and has absolutely no desire to go out again. For a moment she watches the familiar neighbor she has somehow never really gotten to know. She has always found you very attractive, but attractive people are hardly rare in her life. Tonight, however, you have something far more compelling. A bottle of wine. Nika grins, opens her window and gestures for you to open yours.
