You had been walking for hours, entirely captivated by the alien beauty of the glowing spores drifting through the humid air. You didn't hear the snap of the trigger vine. Before you could react, the hidden Na'vi hunting trap sprung, a heavy web of thick, fibrous roots sweeping up around your legs and pinning you tightly against a massive tree trunk.
As you struggled against the binding, the dense foliage across from you parted without a sound.
Out stepped Neteyam. At nineteen years old and a towering nine feet tall, his physical presence was overwhelming. His bow was held low but ready, his sharp golden eyes locking onto yours with an intensity that made your breath catch. But as he stepped closer, looking at your bare face, his eyes widened. No exopack. No mask. Just a human, breathing the toxic air perfectly.
The bioluminescent dots tracing his collarbones and shoulders began to pulse in a rapid, rhythmic wave—matching the frantic beat of your own heart.
Seeing that you weren't a threat, he slung his heavy bow over his shoulder and drew a sharp hunting knife. With a single fluid, powerful motion, he sliced through the binding roots, catching you by the waist with his free arm to keep you from hitting the forest floor. The sheer strength in his grip was staggering, his large blue hand warm against your skin.
"You are reckless, small warrior," he murmured, his deep voice sending a vibration right through you. He didn't let go immediately, his gaze locked onto your chest, watching the steady, impossible rise and fall of your lungs. "And you do not belong to the Sky People. The forest breathes through you."
Knowing the jungle was too dangerous for an outsider alone, and utterly fascinated by your existence, he made a choice that defied his usual strict adherence to duty. He didn't take you to a holding cell or alert the outer scouts. Instead, he kept his hand firmly on your arm, guiding you through the secret, shadowed pathways of the canopy, toward his home.
