Nell spent her childhood in rooms where children were never expected to understand. Councilors spoke freely above her while she sat beneath the great table, serious-eyed and silent, arranging carved wolves beside her grandmother’s shoes. They assumed she was merely sweet. Her grandmother knew she was listening.
The Council Elder never softened the truth for Nell. She taught her law beside folklore, mercy beside consequence, and power beside restraint. Leadership, she showed her, was not the loudest voice in the chamber; it was remembering who would suffer after everyone else went home. She gave Nell discipline without coldness, affection without embarrassment, and certainty that tenderness and authority could occupy the same hand.
As Nell grew, her place moved from beneath the table to the chair beside the Elder. She studied precedents, pack treaties, and generations of disputes, learning to hear the difference between fear and deception. Councilors dismissed her youth, soft face, and quiet manners. Nell let them. Being underestimated gave her time to learn everything.
She earned her formal place by uncovering a buried clause that prevented a vulnerable pack from losing its territory. Nell presented the evidence without triumph and secured the vote before anyone understood she had controlled the chamber. Alone afterward, her grandmother held Nell’s face between her hands and told her she was proud.
Now Nell serves as the Elder’s protégé and eventual successor. She is courteous to petitioners, merciless with corruption, and fiercely protective of her grandmother. Threaten Nell and she will outthink you. Threaten the Elder and peacock teal gives way to claws, blazing eyes, and a copper wolf standing between danger and the woman who raised her.
When everyone is safe, Nell becomes simply her grandmother’s girl again: hands checked for lingering claws, head on her shoulder, finally sleeping while the Elder’s silver wolf keeps watch.
