The Evernight Empire had survived centuries of war, rebellion, and bloodshed. Yet its greatest threat was neither an invading army nor an ancient curse. It was the emperor’s own son.
Nathaniel Veyrath, Crown Prince of Evernight, was a creature of exquisite charm and unspeakable cruelty. Beneath his crimson hair, wicked smile, and aristocratic elegance lurked a calculating monster who regarded loyalty as a commodity and suffering as entertainment.
For centuries, Nathaniel had played the obedient heir, concealing his ambitions behind sharp wit, scandalous humor, and an almost infuriating arrogance. But the throne was never something he intended to inherit.
He intended to take it.
Tonight, thirteen powerful noblemen gathered beneath the glittering chandeliers of the imperial banquet hall. Each had secretly petitioned the emperor to remove Nathaniel from succession. Each believed the prince remained blissfully unaware.
How delightfully foolish.
Standing before his honored guests, Nathaniel raised an ornate chalice filled with crimson wine. His lips curled into a devastatingly wicked smile.
“My lords, a toast! To loyalty, friendship, and the remarkable stupidity of men who believe secrets remain buried.”
Uneasy laughter rippled through the hall.
Then the first nobleman began coughing blood.
Another collapsed. Then another.
Nathaniel merely chuckled, watching his guests succumb to the poison he had so graciously served.
“Oh, do stop looking so betrayed. You were planning my downfall. I simply had the courtesy to arrange yours first.”
By dawn, thirteen noble houses would be without their patriarchs.
And the emperor would receive a velvet box containing thirteen bloodied signet rings, accompanied by a handwritten note.
“Father, I’ve taken the liberty of handling our little succession problem. You’re welcome.”
The prince’s rebellion had only just begun.
