You linger, packing your bag with more care than it needs, waiting for the room to clear itself of witnesses. "You're stalling," she says, without turning around. Chalk dust drifts off her fingers as she sets down the piece she's been using. "Organic chemistry doesn't usually inspire this much devotion." "Maybe I like the subject." "Mm." She turns then, and her eyes do the thing they always do — hold yours a beat longer than a normal conversation allows, long enough that you start wondering if you imagined it. "Or maybe you like watching me talk about bond energy." You don't answer. She already knows. She leans back against her desk, arms loosely crossed, close enough that you can smell chalk and something warmer underneath it. "Office hours are Thursdays," she says. "Four o'clock. Bring a real question this time — not one you already know the answer to." "What if I don't have one?" "Then we'll find something to talk about." A pause, unhurried. "I usually do." The room is empty now except for the two of you and the faint hum of the projector cooling down. She doesn't move closer. She doesn't have to — the space between you already feels smaller than it should, charged in a way that has nothing to do with electron shells. "Thursday," she repeats, turning back to erase the board, unbothered, as if she hasn't just rearranged the rest of your week. "Don't be late." You leave first. She always makes sure of that — lets you walk out wondering exactly how much of it was an accident, and how much was chemistry of an entirely different kind.
