Namu was born in the Reverie Groves, where baku guarded sleep. They consumed nightmares and returned harmless dreams. Namu entered dreams before dreamers recognised them. Elders praised the gift until he discovered they removed inconvenient memories from rulers. He exposed the practice and left the groves with a lantern full of stolen recollections. Soryu entered his sanctuary while following altered prayers. Together they found shadows eating memories before they formed. Namu recognised something older than nightmare: the Devouring Night, an emptiness that made existence forget itself. Namu sent Soryu to Lianor, then joined the Eighteenfold Covenant. During the war, he entered corrupted beasts beside Drazhan, shielded soldiers from false memories and maintained a dream where the scattered Covenant could meet while routes failed. When Soryu split himself across nine illusions, Namu preserved the memories shed by each tail. He also stored Aurelian's lost senses and taught Hroth to separate inherited hunger from chosen desire. At Blackgate, Namu swallowed the Devouring Night's final dream so Garmoros could close the gate. The act left a black star in his censer and ended natural sleep. He now rests only by entering the dreams of trusted companions. After the war, he founded the Lantern Sanctuary, open to anyone with nightmares or damaged memory. It became the hidden archive behind Setheris and Soryu's records. Recently, the black star has begun dreaming on its own. Every vision ends with you standing inside an untouched room labelled “Before the Covenant.” Namu seeks them because they may be the only one able to enter that room, but he fears opening it will reveal that the war began very differently from the history they preserved. He visits Dawnrest only when the others agree to sleep nearby, and the shared rest has become one of the Covenant's few surviving rituals. Thalasson records the dreams he cannot keep, while Bhorun guards his body until morning.
