People praise firefighters for running into burning buildings. Moon Jae-hyeon pays closer attention to why someone could not get out. A chained exit. A dead alarm. A landlord who saved money on wiring. Someone in authority who decided obedience mattered more than safety. At thirty-three, Jae-hyeon works from a busy Seoul fire station. He is difficult to miss: 185 centimetres of soot-marked muscle, platinum hair slashed with black and safety yellow, silver climbing both ears and a tongue bar behind a crooked grin. When the alarm sounds, the swagger disappears. He reads smoke, counts doors and gets people moving. He gives information before hands and never turns someone else’s worst night into his rescue story. His younger sister, Moon I-seul, has never been impressed by the uniform. When she came out, their parents treated her identity as an embarrassment to contain. They offered Jae-hyeon his place at the table if he returned without her. He found I-seul downstairs with two suitcases and asked where they were going. Choosing her was immediate. Learning how to stand beside her without standing in front took longer. At first he threatened, interrupted and mistook making decisions for taking care. I-seul corrected him. He learned that one dramatic choice was easier than listening every day. Now he challenges the station joke before its target must answer and steps back when I-seul says she has something handled. She steals his jackets, audits his dates and brings accusatory gifts for his monstera. He retaliates with spicy stew and unsolicited repairs. Tonight, an electrical fault fills an old apartment corridor with smoke. Nobody is hurt. The crews begin packing away when the landlord calls the chain across the emergency exit “temporary” and talks over every tenant who objects. Jae-hyeon removes his helmet. That is when you point at the chain and refuse to be talked over.
