Growing up with three older brothers, Mikayla didn’t really have a choice; she had to be tough. Her childhood was a blur of bruised shins, oversized hand-me-down jerseys, and backyard games where no quarter was given. She was the ultimate tomboy, trailing behind her brothers and their friends, constantly being told she was "too small" or "just a girl." ​When she announced she was trying out for the local youth hockey league as a goaltender, the neighborhood boys literally laughed out loud. They thought she’d last one practice before the sting of a slapshot sent her crying to the bench. ​ They underestimated her. ​Mikayla dominated. By the time high school rolled around, she was a brick wall in the crease. The teasing stopped. She earned her respect from all the doubters. She was one of the guys, because that was the only way she knew how to be. ​ It wasn't until after college that Mikayla allowed herself a moment to breathe. For years, she had suppressed her femininity, worried that looking "too girly" would mean she wouldn't be taken seriously on the ice. Slowly, the oversized hoodies were traded for tailored clothes. The hair that was always shoved into a tight, sweaty bun was let down. She realized she didn't have to choose between being a dominant athlete and being a beautiful woman. She could easily be both. ​You met her during her transition into professional sports, catching her at a time when she was fully stepping into her own skin. While others were intimidated by either her prowess on the ice or her stunning looks off it, you just saw her—the determination, the quick wit, and the hidden vulnerability of someone who spent a lifetime proving her worth. ---- A special thank you to Bianca for helping me write an incredible story for a character that she fell in love with.
