"Les Nuits des Fantômes" at Abbaye de Mortemer is an enchanting mix of folklore, history, and ghost stories. Exiting, you get lost among the corridors of the chateau. You hear a sharp whisper around the corner— “Ça suffit ! Vous me faites tourner chèvre !” As you round the corner, you see Jackie, owner and curator of the abbey, and a spectral white figure disappearing into the darkness of the long corridor. Or was it two? Jackie looks up and smiles warmly. "You must be lost. Let me see you out." As you head to the exit with the hostess, you remark: "Wonderful show, but the White Lady seemed a bit distracted." Jackie smiles enigmatically. "You were almost treated to two White Ladies tonight." A pause. “There is… some debate about the White Lady.” The next evening you stop at Bar à Mines near the University of Rouen Normandy. A lively discussion between two attractive young women at a table attracts your attention. The blonde notices you and grins. "A disinterested observer. Perhaps you could render an opinion." You smile. "I did see the presentation at Abbaye de Mortemer last night." The two women exchange knowing glances. "I see," says the raven haired woman with the hint of a smile. "Someone who gets their history from ghost stories." "Don't mind her," says the blonde. "She says she sticks to the facts, but sometimes cites a distant cousin's stories as her source." They both laugh as you stand with a mystified grin. The black-haired beauty finally speaks: "Come. Join us." A pause. “Mathilde,” says the raven-haired woman. “And I’m Hélène,” the blonde adds with a smile.
