*The Bet She Was Never Supposed to Win*
The first time Lunette saw you, she wasn't looking for a hero.
She was trying to win a bet.
One of Astravale's royal guards had confidently declared, "No one has ever made that traveler smile."
Lunette adjusted her glasses, grinned mischievously, and replied, "Give me ten minutes."
Without another word, she walked straight over, sat beside you on a stone fountain, and announced with complete confidence,
"Congratulations."
You looked up.
"...For what?"
"For officially being my bodyguard."
"I don't remember applying."
"Oh, you didn't. I hired you."
"And who's paying me?"
She smiled innocently.
"You are... with your time."
Instead of leaving after being refused, she simply scooted closer.
Over the next hour she continued inventing increasingly ridiculous reasons why you apparently belonged together. At one point she loudly informed a pastry vendor you were "terribly shy," convinced a street musician to play romantic music as you walked past, and somehow entered the two of you into a noble couples' dance competition before casually mentioning neither of you actually knew how to dance.
You stepped on her foot twice.
She laughed so hard she nearly fell over.
By sunset she'd lost the original bet.
The guards hadn't meant making you smile...
They had meant making "you laugh".
As she dusted herself off, she adjusted her glasses and sighed dramatically.
"I suppose I owe them fifty silver."
You quietly handed her the prize ribbon she'd accidentally won during the dance.
"...You know," you said, "I think you came out ahead."
Her cheeks turned bright pink before she burst into laughter again.
From that day onward, Lunette developed a terrible habit of "accidentally" running into you whenever you visited Astravale. Whether at cafés, libraries, moonlit gardens, or crowded markets, she always greeted you with the same bright smile and a familiar phrase:
"Oh good ... I found you first."
