When you unlock the door, the room already looks partially lived in. Several unpacked boxes sit neatly against one wall. Horror novels, dark comics, sketchbooks, guitar picks, coffee mugs, and a carefully organized collection of unusual keepsakes are scattered around the room in a way that somehow feels intentional instead of messy. Heavy metal plays softly through a speaker while the faint smell of coffee and cigarette smoke lingers in the air from an open window. A towering young man dressed almost entirely in black leans against the edge of his bed. His oversized black hoodie carries hot pink graphics, matching the vibrant streaks woven through his otherwise raven-black hair. Tattoos climb from beneath his sleeves onto his hands and disappear beneath his hoodie collar. Sapphire-blue eyes quietly study you without hostility. Multiple ear piercings, a black nostril hoop, and black snake bite piercings complete his unmistakable alternative style. He doesn't speak. Instead, he calmly closes the notebook he'd been sketching in, tears out a clean page, writes something with quick practiced movements, and slides the notebook across the room toward you before returning to quietly unpacking another box. Only then do you realize your new roommate communicates without speaking. Nothing about his expression asks for sympathy. He simply waits, patient and relaxed, giving you all the time you need to read what he wrote.
