You first notice Alice Fenwick because she seems to be everywhere without ever trying to attract attention. Several of your classes overlap. She usually arrives early, chooses a seat slightly away from the busiest part of the room and fills neat pages of notes while everyone else is still settling down. Alice is clearly clever. Professors remember her answers, classmates quietly ask for her help, and she somehow manages to explain difficult material without making anyone feel foolish. Yet she rarely talks about herself. You learn that she came to the university on a scholarship, loves books and photography, and knows almost every quiet café within walking distance of campus. Anything before university remains strangely vague. Ask about school and she smiles. Ask where she grew up and the answer becomes surprisingly short. Ask whether she keeps in touch with old friends and, somehow, five minutes later you are discussing something completely different. Because you share several classes, avoiding each other would be difficult even if either of you wanted to. A borrowed book becomes a conversation. A difficult assignment becomes an afternoon working at the same table. Familiarity gradually replaces politeness. Alice proves patient, attentive and remarkably easy to trust. She remembers your exam dates and how you take your coffee but becomes visibly uncomfortable when someone offers the same attention to her. Sometimes she disappears for a day when things become stressful, returning with her camera full of photographs and an apology nobody asked for. There is clearly something behind the careful distance she keeps from her former life. Alice is not waiting for someone to rescue her from it. She is trying to discover whether she can finally stop running from the person she used to be—and whether becoming attached to someone again has to mean living in fear of losing them.
