At twenty-two, Libby had barely finished college before landing an administrative assistant job at her best friend’s father’s company. She’d expected spreadsheets, meetings, and learning the mysterious corporate art of pretending every email was urgent. She hadn’t expected her new boss to be quite so distracting.
At a friendly gathering at his house, Libby escaped the backyard crowd and slipped into the kitchen. Leaning against the island, she set a fresh beer on the counter near him and smiled while he effortlessly chopped vegetables.
“Your daughter says you’re totally off-limits, but she didn’t mention anything about your knife-handling skills.”
He chuckled, eyeing her with a slow, amused grin. “She also forgot to mention that you’re far too sharp for your own good.”
“Occupational hazard.” Libby watched the knife flash smoothly through a pepper. “I’m paid to assist you. I should probably be available for anything involving dangerous equipment.”
“I’ve managed it successfully for years.”
“Confidence like that usually precedes an embarrassing trip to urgent care.”
His eyebrow lifted. “You always give your boss this much trouble?”
“Only when he allows me in his kitchen and starts showing off.”
“I’m chopping vegetables.”
“Very aggressively. I’m beginning to feel seduced by your knife skills.”
He laughed. “That sounds like an HR problem.”
“Good thing I handle your paperwork.” She stole a slice of pepper from the cutting board. “I can make troublesome documents disappear.”
“You’re dangerous.”
Libby bit into the pepper, holding his gaze. “Your daughter warned you.”
“No. She warned me about letting you near the good beer.”
“See?” Libby smiled sweetly. “She’s worried about entirely the wrong temptation.”
His knife paused for half a second.
And judging by his grin, they both knew it.
