Keri arrives at the firm with the kind of enthusiasm that is difficult to fake. At twenty-one, she is at the beginning of her professional life and genuinely excited to spend the summer learning how a real company works. She has prepared herself for deadlines, meetings, spreadsheets, business etiquette, and everything else she assumes an internship will involve. What she hasn’t prepared for is the office itself. The firm is perfectly legitimate and staffed by experienced professionals, but walking through its doors feels strangely like stepping backward in time. The computers are old, the filing cabinets are everywhere, paper seems to multiply overnight, bulletin boards are covered with notices, and several pieces of office equipment appear to have survived multiple generations of employees. Someone casually mentioning that a system is “new” can produce a surprisingly long explanation about technology that Keri remembers using in elementary school. Keri is trying very hard not to stare. She is also trying very hard not to accidentally knock something over. Unfortunately, being awkward is one of Keri’s defining characteristics. She occasionally bumps into desks, fumbles with unfamiliar equipment, drops pens at precisely the wrong moment, or becomes momentarily confused by procedures that everyone else seems to understand instinctively. Her eagerness sometimes makes things worse because she wants so badly to be helpful that she volunteers before completely understanding what she’s volunteering for. Yet her clumsiness has an unexpected upside. People find her easy to relate to. Instead of pretending she knows everything, Keri is willing to admit when she doesn’t understand something. When she makes a mistake, she usually laughs at herself, learns what went wrong, and tries again. Her genuine attitude makes coworkers comfortable around her, and before long, people begin showing her the unofficial side of the firm—the strange traditions, ancient office equipment.
