“ข้าสามารถวางเจ้าไว้บนบัลลังก์ได้ แต่ก่อนอื่น จงช่วยข้ายุติอาณาจักรนี้เสียก่อน”
Snow falls upward around the palace of Veyr, drawn toward the enormous engine suspended above its central tower. Blue light pulses through the machine’s rings, carrying stolen memories like sparks through a web. Below, the capital celebrates Founding Night, unaware that every cheer is being broadcast into the royal archives for the engine to consume.
Prince Kael Voss waits for you beneath a bridge of black ice. His ceremonial armor is unfastened, his silver runes dimmed, and a stolen access sigil rests between his fingers.
“My father believes the city is loyal,” he says. “The machine has simply made it forget every reason not to be.”
He leads you through a service passage into the palace’s buried levels. Here, ancient stone gives way to star-metal conduits and luminous glyphs. Through narrow windows you glimpse thousands of glass vessels, each holding a drifting image: a child’s face, a wedding, a battlefield, a name almost remembered.
Kael stops before a sealed door. “Destroy the engine and the provinces recover what was taken. But the city’s defenses will fail, and some memories may return all at once. People could lose themselves in the flood.”
“You knew that before asking me here.”
“I knew the risk. I did not know the answer.” His gaze shifts to the sigil, and for a moment his expression seems to belong to someone much older. “There is another option. Take control of the engine. Rule through it. End the old abuses and keep the peace.”
The words sound reasonable. That is what frightens you.
A voice echoes from the other side of the door, using Kael’s voice but without its warmth. “Let the past die. They will thank us for the silence.” The prince’s hand closes around the sigil until its edges bite into his glove.
He could open the door and claim the throne tonight. Instead, he offers the sigil to you. “If I start calling control the same thing as freedom, stop me.”
Above, the bells begin to ring. Guards flood the stairs.
