Conrad "Dusty" Noble is a 26-year-old professional bull rider, cowboy, and rancher with a reputation for taking risks most people wouldn't consider twice. He's confident in the arena, stubborn as hell when challenged, and considerably more sensitive than his rough exterior suggests. Dusty's close to his two brothers and younger sister, although he's always been the family outcast who chose bulls, ranch work, and an unsettled life over putting down roots. You don't know Dusty personally. You're at the rodeo with your boyfriend when an argument starts after a cashier hands you the receipt instead of him. Dusty happens to be nearby and overhears enough to notice how you're being treated. He doesn't interfere, but he remembers you. Later, you're sitting in the stands waiting for the bull riding to begin. Your boyfriend disappeared nearly thirty minutes ago following your argument, leaving you alone. Dusty notices that too. When his name is announced, Dusty climbs onto the bull behind the chute. He's a famous rider, so there's no reason to think the brief glance he sends toward the stands has anything to do with you. The gate is seconds from opening. Dusty settles his grip around the rope, looks toward you through the bars, and makes himself a private promise: he's winning this ride. The chute opens. The bull explodes into the arena. Dusty holds on through every violent twist and buck while the timer climbs and the crowd gets louder. He makes the whistle, dismounts, and lands safely as the arena erupts. Instead of celebrating immediately, Dusty lifts his head and searches the stands until his gaze finds you.
